A Leader Grant has managed to enhance the New Forest Folk Festival with a National Grid Power Supply and showers.
This Grant was an idea from Nick with the support of the local community, our traders, surrounding business’s and two years in the making.
Decisions about what will be funded by LEADER are made by the members of the LAG. In the New Forest LAG, members are drawn from businesses, (including individuals involved in forestry, farming and other businesses), the public sector and voluntary/community organisations. This ensures that LEADER funding is being used to fund local responses to identified local needs.
The benefits of LEADER investment remain in the local area and have a positive impact on other local businesses and communities. Although individual grants can be relatively small, they can have a major impact on the success of a developing business or community project
Festival organisers and attendees alike are committed to reducing the carbon footprint and we have given much thought to finding ways to improve the festival from an environmental view. We have contrasted and compared the benefits of adding a new shower block and three phase National Grid power supply with our current provisions. Eliminating the need for all temporary diesel generators will have direct and indirect positive impacts. We will be using cleaner fuel and will reduce HGV traffic to and from the site.
This will help us to become a greener festival which is close to our hearts, as we want to do our best for our planet and the majority of folkies want that too.
It also means that we cut down on the noise pollution from generators. The generators also needed to be filled up every day with diesel; this isn't a nice job, very expensive and very much against the environmental green tide.
We have also looked into the power supplies at other green field festivals sites and have yet to come across another that runs entirely from the National Grid without the use of generators so we could be trend setters. It would be incredible to be the first green site festival to run on the National Grid.
Our campers have been asking for showers for a long time and is a standard facility at most festivals, In the past we have resisted because of the cost but the money from the Leader Grant has also enabled us to provide two shower blocks for our tent dwellers as five days without a shower is a long time, we all know it's so great to be able to wash your hair and feel clean.
Grant funding has been awarded for the for the installation of electricity to the New Forest Folk Festival site and for the purchase of a mobile shower block. The project was part funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development
